4,000 drivers lose licences over failing eyesight!
The importance of having a regular eye examination if you are a driver was bought home to me in this article from the Daily Telegraph 24th October.
“The number of drivers who have lost their driving licence because of failing eyesight has more than doubled in the past four years.
Those whose licence was revoked in 2006 totalled 1,597, but the figure reached 4,009 last year, according to figures obtained by the Co-operative Motor Group following a freedom of information request.
The group’s managing director Tony Guest said: “Good eyesight is essential to safe motoring, and we would urge anybody who has concerns over their vision to contact a specialist.
“There is no room for complacency when it comes to road safety.”’
The Co-operative Motor Group said the law demanded that any driver with concerns over their eyesight should see a doctor or eye specialist and must contact the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, if they are advised to do so.
The group said the agency must be informed if a driver has a condition, which makes it dangerous for them to drive.
Failure to do so is punishable by a fine of up to £1,000, and will invalidate a driver’s insurance.”
