Family eyecare tips for the summer holidays

As we officially welcome the summer, so comes the expectation of long days with hours of sunshine. You may be already counting down the days to a summer holiday, but it’s important to consider family eyecare, even if you’re not planning to travel far.

Sun’s out, sunnies on

We all know how easily the sun can damage our skin, and our eyes are no exception. Sunburned eyes, otherwise known as photokeratitis, occur when ultraviolet (UV) rays damage the surface of the eyes.

This can result in blurred vision, redness, and temporary vision loss. UV rays can also cause long term eye damage which can contribute to the development of macular degeneration and cataracts in later life.

We recommend using 100% UV protection sunglasses, especially for children whose eyes aren’t fully developed, to safely block out harmful rays.

Remember those contacts!

Contact lenses should be removed whenever entering water. The lenses can harbour bacteria and microorganisms if worn in swimming pools, hot tubs and while showering. Wearing swimming goggles can help reduce irritation from chlorine and the risk of infection.

Working outside

We spend more time in the garden during the summer months, and that means breaking out the mowers and trimmers. Tools like these can cause debris to become a potential hazard to your eyes or for anyone in the vicinity. Adequate eye protection, such as safety goggles, should be worn and extra caution is needed when others are close by.

Sun cream

Your face naturally catches a lot of sunlight. While it’s vital to apply sunscreen throughout the day, it can cause irritation if it gets in your eyes. Mineral-based sunscreens may prove a better solution as they stick to the skin and are less likely to run into your eyes.

Eat well, drink plenty

In summer you are more likely to become dehydrated, which causes eye strain, so remember to drink plenty of fluids. Foods that are good for your eyes include nuts, seeds, tomatoes, courgettes, green peppers, and blueberries – perfect, refreshing food for a hot day – so aim to include these in your diet.

Eye tests

Having regular eye tests is not just helpful to see if you need glasses but can also pick up any eye health issues early on. Remember, you or your children might be entitled to a free eye test under the NHS too – you can ask your local practice team if you aren’t sure if this applies to you.
