ACES (Acute Community Eyecare Scheme) is a service available to patients who are registered with a GP in Somerset. This service provides quick access to care for recently occurring medical eye conditions, meaning you can receive treatment close to home, without needing to travel to a hospital eye service (HES). It is fully covered by the NHS, making it an accessible option for those experiencing sudden or urgent eye health concerns.

 

What Conditions Can Be Treated by ACES?

The ACES service is specifically designed to help with recently occurring medical eye conditions, offering prompt and effective care for a range of symptoms. Some of the common conditions treated by ACES include:

• Sudden or recent loss of vision in one or both eyes
• Redness in the eye(s) or eyelids
• Eye pain or discomfort, including around the eyes, temples, or in the surrounding areas
• Flashes or floaters that appear suddenly or have increased recently in one or both eyes
• Mild trauma to the eye, such as a scratch on the outer surface of the eye or eyelid
• Suspected foreign body in the eye (e.g., something stuck in the eye)
• Recent onset of double vision (seeing two images of a single object)
• Excessive eye discharge or watering, which may be significant or sudden
