The Goldmann visual field test is a specialized eye test used to measure the central 30 degrees of your vision. This test is particularly useful for assessing your peripheral (side) vision and can provide valuable information about your eye health. While many visual field tests use automated machines like the Humphrey analyser, the Goldmann test is unique because it requires an operator to manually control where flashes of light appear in your field of vision.
The Goldmann visual field test is often used in certain medical situations, such as DVLA testing (required for certain driving licenses) or when a hospital consultant needs to assess a specific area of your vision. It’s a reliable way to detect areas of vision loss or abnormalities that may not be immediately noticeable.
In addition to its use in routine eye exams, the Goldmann test is particularly helpful for monitoring individuals with Ocular Hypertension (OHT). OHT occurs when the pressure inside the eye is consistently higher than normal, but there are no other signs of glaucoma (a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve).
If you have OHT, it’s important to regularly monitor your eye health to ensure the condition doesn’t develop into glaucoma. Although OHT doesn’t always result in glaucoma, it increases the risk, and catching any changes early can help prevent further damage. In cases where pressure is high but there are no signs of glaucoma, the Goldmann test can be used to track your visual field over time.
Regular monitoring is essential for people with OHT. If necessary, you may be referred to a specialist for further treatment, or your doctor may prescribe eye drops to help reduce the pressure inside your eyes.
